Swan Hill Bridge Upgrade Traffic Study

Ason Group has been engaged to undertake traffic modelling works to support the proposed upgrade of the Swan Hill/ Murray River Road bridge. The bridge provides a key crossing opportunity across the Murray River and services agricultural freight routes between NSW and Victoria. It also operates as a lift span bridge, allowing for river traffic to pass underneath, and resulting in significant delays for road users.

Ason Group are developing an Aimsun model to assess various bridge alignments and supporting intersection upgrades across the surrounding road network. This work will provide input into a wider business case, not only informing preferred upgrade options for the bridge.

Ason Group are also providing analysis of numerous available data sources to infer the benefits to freight efficiency across the wider regional road network, as well as any potential impacts during construction. The project also considers potential relocation of existing pedestrian infrastructure. This involves the survey and analysis of pedestrian movements in proximity to the bridge to ensure safe pedestrian facilities are included in the design of the new bridge.

Our work included

  • Development of an Aimsun Microsimulation traffic model of the Swan Hill/ Murray Rover Road Bridge and the immediately surrounding road network.
  • Survey using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (Drone) and TomTom GPS.
  • Analysis and review of further datasets to assess freight movement across the wider network due to the proposed Bridge upgrades.
  • Potential improvements to existing infrastructure by conducting with 24-hour pedestrian movement analysis.
